Children's Books about the Environment

In a sea of children books that share life lessons to prepare kids for the real world, there are a handful of books about helping the environment and going green. It’s important for kids to be informed about the environment and how they can individually help it.  These are just a few of our personal favorites.

The Earth and I
The Earth and I is a short picture book for younger children. It is an emotional tale of a child and its friend, the Earth.  In this story, the child learns ways to make the Earth happy.  It’s a simple book that establishes the basics for caring the Earth.

The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle
This children’s book is a picture book as well, but with a lot more reading involved.  This story shows the current life cycle for many water bottles, which often end in landfills. The book shows kids how small actions can make a huge difference when it comes to recycling items like water bottles.

I Can Save the Earth!: One Little Monster Learns to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
This book is part of the Little Green Books series, which is an educational green series for kids. We found this particular book to be adorable.  It’s about a little monster named Max.  He’s a monster, especially to the environment. He wreaks havoc by forgetting to turn off electronics, overusing toilet paper, and leaving the lights on.  His excessive use of energy causes a power outage. Without the entertainment, Max gets in tune with nature and realizes it’s time to change his ways to make a difference in the world.  Throughout the book there are tips and terms about the environment to help kids gain environmental awareness.  It’s also pretty cool that the book is printed on 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper and soy ink.
